Sailing yachts 07.10.2009
Long ago it was the name for all light, fast ships, which were used by Hollanders in the chase pirates. That's why the Netherlands are often called the motherland of yachting. But it's more correct to think that the place of rebirth of yachts is Great Britain. People started to use yachts with tourist purpose during the period of English King Charles II (1630-1685). The use of vessels for rest has a long history. Many ancient kings had a private ship for a good pastime.

Charles II stimulated the development of yacht sport and use of yachts as “ships for rest”

Till the 50-s of the previous century yachts were basically made of wood. But modern progress went forward. Today glass fibre, steel, aluminum and plastic are used for construction of yachts.

Wooden yachts are still produced, but only for an individual order. And for high-speed racing yachts, which participate in world famous regattas carbon fiber is used.

Modern yachts have highly effective sails, which catch the streams of air very intensively. The length and the area of the sails influence the speed quality of a sailing yacht. The more these parameters are, the quicker your yacht goes to the aim. On the contrary, displacement of the yacht influence negatively the speed quality, but high level of displacement and draught increase stability of the ship, it becomes more manoeuvrable.
As a rule, sailing yachts are divided into several categories:
- centerboarders;
- weekend yachts;
- cruise yachts;
- racing yachts.
The history of yachting 07.11.2009
According to the history, the appearance of yacht fleet is connected with the name of Queen Victoria. A small town Cowes, situated on a British Isle of Wight is considered to be the birthplace of yachting. Every year devotees of yacht sports come here for a traditional week festival. Though there is information that small high-speed sailing boats, with the help of which Hollanders were following after sea pirates were called yachts, it is fair to think that Holland bears relations with the yachting too.

The love for yacht sports used to be available only for very rich people, because the size of yachts was very big, and a whole crew was needed for its servicing. Today the variety of yacht types together with modern technologies of production helps to make them more available. That's why yachting becomes more and more popular for the inhabitants of coast. Sportive component of yachting may be realized with the help of different races and regattas. It may be both amateur competitions and serious sports contests. Though, one should spend a lot of time and money (for example to keep the crew and modern equipment of the vessel with the latest novelties) in order to participate in sports competition in sailing sport, you can hardly call it only a hobby.

Competitions are usually held among different yacht classes. The classification is made according to the size of the vessel. Regattas are the most serious and popular races. Usually, regattas continue for several days. The yachts sail a certain way in the ocean from one point to another. That's the place where it is possible to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the ship and professional qualities of the crew. There are round-the-world regattas. The most popular short-time regattas are: Fastnet race (England) and Sydney to Hobat Yacht Race (Australia). The regatta that has the longest history is more than 150 years (for the first time took place in 1851). It's the American Cup. Today this regatta involves both small and huge yachts.

Competitions in closed harbors are held for the public. They can be spectacular, if competitions are held with bad weather conditions, in storm.

Prehistory
Almost everyone of us in his childhood was reading novels and has never missed a movie about brave explorers, fearless sailors and legendary pirates. We were fascinated with their adventures. We admired the heroism of these brave people, we were a little envious and often imagined ourselves at the helm of a sailing ship, which was rushing towards the mysteries and treasures of distant lands under sails, filled with wind. It was a cherished dream, and we believed sincerely that it would come true.
Years have passed. The boys grew up, and the romantic dream got lost among the more prosaic purposes: to plant a tree, to build a house, to give birth to a son and to do many other things, that are necessary in our lives. Someone has forgotten his boyish desire and has wallowed in hopeless chaos. But someone saw distant countries, having made a comfortable flight, or conquered the high ocean waves on surfing and thus he has created for himself the illusion that his dream was accomplished. Some people even managed to get luck and buy a respectable boat to ride it along the shores of luxury resorts, where the celebrities have rest. But it is not more than an illusion substituting the dream itself, which entertains their steadily growing self-esteem.
But there are people who, despite their considerable achievements and success, respectability and position in society, have not ruined romance in their souls and remained true to their dreams. They are building ships, raising sails and go to distant shores, discovering the world, which opened to our ancestors - the world that run away from civilization and hid from the people in the endless expanses of ocean.
And so, one of such people has built a yacht to realize his boyish dream - to make a circumnavigation in the way, which the fleet of the great Ferdinand Magellan has made in the 16 th century and which was the first marine expedition around the globe in the human history. The yacht turned out to be like a dream - a swift and extraordinarily beautiful - and it has obtained the same beautiful name "Lady Katrin". The team came on board. And then a phrase, so often repeated in the childhood, when we imagined ourselves captains, was said: "Raise the sails! Unmoor! ".
Good luck, "Lady Katrin"!

First stage. From the shores of Turkey through the Mediterranean sea to Morocco.

Second stage. Crossing the Atlantic from Morocco to the shores of Brazil.
Third stage. Through waters of the Atlantic Ocean along the Brazilian coast to Cape Horn.
Fourth stage. The further trip depends on how quiet the Pacific will be: the vessel will either go round Cape Horn, or deviating from the severe storms it will pass through the Strait of Magellan, but in any case, it will go along the coast of Chile to the Galapagos Islands.

Step 1: Mediterranean Sea from Turkey to Morocco (03.08.2010-21.08.2010)

03/08/2010. Beginning
This day for me, as for most of our international team can be considered as the beginning of the world tour. Although "Lady Katrin" was still waiting for us at the dock, I left home and I will come back here just after the end of the transition across the Mediterranean. Our group of five people, headed by the captain, must first reach the point of the start of the sea route. And now, we need to do quite a long way on the land. For the legendary Magellan, on the route of whom the yacht "Lady Katrin" should go, it would have been a long and exhausting way. But it's not the beginning of the16 th century but the beginning of the 21 th century now, so I hope to do it quickly and with comfort.
As we have been going to make a part of this distance, not by land, but in the sky, our first goal was Dnipropetrovsk airport. And though the distance between Kharkov and Dnepropetrovsk is not more than three hours on a good road, we managed to be pressed for time. It all happened because of our Slavic habit of doing everything at the last moment, and we were trying to complete some important business even on the road. As a result, minutes of delay have accumulated in the hours, the deficit of which creates a considerable problem later. We didn't become an exception and, as befits the travelers we have found an adventure even from nothing. In the rush and bustle our driver, who was quite familiar with the route turned somehow to the wrong turn - and we went on the longest road, which gave us a shot of adrenaline before the sailing. But, strangely enough, we have managed to come in time, even with a reserve time and we could get registered calmly, drink some whiskey and then add some beer. To have a little drink before a long journey - is an old Ukrainian tradition, which is called the "to make the road straight". And enjoying this time, I came to the conclusion that this ancient ceremony had to be done before leaving home, and in that case everything would have been in the proper way. But, nevertheless, everything went well. I supposed we had to thank the lucky star of our captain. My idea was supported and fixed with a toast. It was the time to go to the plane, where we could continue.
In contrast to the traveling by car the flight was calm. We were flying with Turkish Airlines, and the Turkish people are still more European in the part of the service and the organization. We flew to Istanbul and from there we flew to Dalaman. We were fed and watered normally (which is especially important), so I stepped to the Turkish land in an excellent mood. The others were also in high spirits. In Dalaman we were met by another member of our team and a minibus of Hotel "Alargasail", which had to be our base for several days. In the hotel we were waited by the skipper Roman, we had a delicious dinner and a pleasant stay.

04/08/2010. Organizational Day
Day of organizational issues, pre-starting panning and relaxation. During pauses of dealing with current issues we all enjoyed the charms of the Mediterranean sea. In general, the day was useful and happy. We were especially pleased with underwater landscapes with numerous colorful fish, the hotel restaurant "Alargasail" and, of course, with an amazing look of the beautiful "Lady Katrin".
Our hotel was located in the town Ichmeler , which is 34 kilometers from the resort of Marmaris. Translated from the Turkish language Icmeler means "lost paradise", which quite reflects the reality: the green of mountain slopes is sliding to the sandy beaches, the sea is always calm, smooth as a mirror and so pure that the seabed can be seen at a depth of several meters. It is an ideal place for yachts, diving, water sports or simply for a family holiday.

05/08/2010. Economic day
The vacation is vacation, the romance of around the world traveling is around the world traveling, but you can not survive in the sea with an empty stomach and without any food stocks. And though we, in comparison with Magellan do not need to stock up with food and water for many months, it is essential to store something. Buying and downloading provisions, as well as providing the documents for going out to the sea should be done in Marmaris. Let's see what kind of place it is.
We can confidently say that Marmaris - this is the most beautiful city on the southwestern coast of Turkey. It is located in one of the world's largest natural harbors, where the Aegean and Mediterranean seas mix their warm waters. The resort of Marmaris is famous for the fact that it has the longest quay of all the Turkish resorts, which extends for about 4 miles. I was a bit sorry that I was here with the economic mission and could not enjoy the pleasures of this wonderful place. It is necessary to return here.
Problems took almost the whole day. Eastern market in Turkey has its own peculiarities. Here, as it befits the Oriental Bazaar there is a lot of noise, temperamental traders and buyers and a large selection of products. But the Turkish markets, at least, in the resort areas get rid successfully of unsanitary conditions and a mess. Here we bought meat, fruit and vegetables. Of course, a resort city status contributes to inflate prices, but, in principle, we as wholesalers had big discounts. People here love to haggle in general, the mentality requires this. The price for meat here is 40 % higher than in Ukraine. I mean lamb, beef and chicken. As you know, it is problematic to find pork here - the Koran does not welcome eating pork. But the lamb was perfect, you can choose everything. In short, we bought a lot at once and we paid about 500 euros for it all.
We have downloaded provisions. Now we had to go to the hotel, eat supper, swim and sleep. Tomorrow we go to the sea.

06/08/2010. First voyage. Exit at sea
The morning did not promised a perfect day. It was cloudy and humid, and this slightly intensified the excitement. Going out to the sea was planned for 9.00. Before this we had a ceremony of taking photographs for history. In the blue branded T-shirts we looked like a real team in the uniform. Formation on the board, the captain in a white cap, it was an exciting moment. I did not believe myself that I was going out to circumnavigate the globe. This was not real, but it was a fact. The photographer has taken a few control photos. Team: "To your places!". People, who are not busy in the process of departure, can wave to the people, seeing off. Cast off. Go with God!

In half an hour after going in the sea the weather has improved. Now the sky was clear, and it just merged with the sea on the horizon. We went along the coast of Turkey. At this time everything looked like a pleasant journey, same as on the journey boats (there are very many such boats here). But the understanding of my superiority over their passengers there took place: I'm not just a tourist, but I am "modern Magellan" - sorry that they didn't know that. I was trying to dilute my pride with looking to the shore.
The coast of Turkey is very beautiful. Mountains, jagged with cozy coves of different depths. The climate has made the country good for life. The state is trying to maximize and develop the tourism industry in a crazy pace, paying special attention to service, the cost of which is much lower than in other places. But the past still has great impact on the level of life, especially in the countryside, where the poverty still dominates, and in mountain villages, where there is even utter poverty . Lack of education of the population (universal education was introduced only 10 years ago) is compensated by hard work. Children learn to work from an early age - they help in restaurants, in the kitchen, in the shops, but even in their young age they want to have at least a little, but their own business. Many of the problems in the country are similar to the Ukrainian - high price for goods, lack of regular employment, low payment (if converted to actual hours worked).
While I was in thoughts about Turkish life, Lenya once again confirmed that he was a skilled fisher. The first tuna has been caught. Long live breadwinner Krasnoperov! For me this was a miracle, but in reality, as Lenya had told, it was simple. You should put wobblers on the spinning, (it is a kind of an artificial fish), release it into the sea at 300 meters until it is swallowed promptly by a hungry big fish. As a matter of fact, you need to have a special spinning rod and tackle for sea fishing, or you will not catch anything.
Tuna was immediately butchered and we ate sashimi, which could not be compared with the restaurant one. Actually, the tuna-fish, caught a few minutes ago, had a special taste! Then it was time to make sure that the woman on the ship - it was not bad, but it was even very good. A delicious home-cooked shurpa, fish balls from fresh tuna were irrefutable proof of that fact.
We were sitting and discussing how the speed of the vessel affected the catch of tuna, and suddenly we noticed that the fishing line was unwinding with an incredible speed .We decided to check what we have caught. It was assumed that it was a package or timber, as it mostly happened, because there were enough of such things even in the Mediterranean Sea. It turned out that we have caught a tuna of 8 pounds. Successful fishing!
We were sailing through the territorial waters of Greece all day long. We had an impression that we were in the center of the earth. When you are standing on the deck and the wind, caught by the sails is singing over your head, and you are surrounded by the sea and the sky only. We are in private with the world. You feel the pulse of life and you come to the understanding of its true values. And when the sky was studded with diamonds of the stars and from their shining the black sky looked white, I felt like a particle of the universe - a microscopic particle of such a giant universe.
By night we got a dose of adrenaline - the yacht passed in 7 meters from one of 2,200 Greek islands. God is merciful! We have realized that the islands were placed here too close, so we decided to stay for the night near some of the island. We could not find its name. Good night to everyone!
Traveling around the world - it is reality. 09.28.2010
